Laser pointer enhances the safety of self-driving vehicles

According to reports, French research firm Leti has teamed up with mobile travel service provider Transdev and R&D center IRT Nanoelec to launch a pilot program to differentiate and evaluate commercial laser pointer radar sensors to improve the performance and safety of autonomous vehicles.

Transdev's latest innovative transportation technology is used to drive a fleet of self-driving vehicles. The sensor's ability to sense the environment is critical to providing the best customer experience in terms of comfort and the speed of operation required for safety. Evaluating the effectiveness and robustness of the sensor is critical to the development of the laser pointer's Autonomous Transport System, which will allow autopilot fleets to operate in the safest environmental conditions.

In this pilot project, the Leti team will focus on sensing requirements and challenges from a Lidar system perspective and evaluate sensors under real-world conditions. Vehicles will be exposed to objects with different reflectivity, such as tires, street signs, natural light and fog. In addition to evaluating sensor performance, the project will also develop a range of standard and objective parameters to evaluate various commercial lidar systems.

Letiuel Sabonnadière, the newly elected CEO of Leti, said: “As an innovative service provider for smart city self-driving transport vehicles, Transdev is using buses and feeders to lead timely, efficient and secure services. The project will be based on Leti’s Based on laser pointer sensor fusion technology and sensor development expertise, Transdev enhances the testing and evaluation of its vehicle sensors."

Yann Leriche, CEO of Transdev North America, said: "Providing the best customer experience, ensuring safety and quality of service will confirm that Transdev is a pioneer in integrating autonomous driving systems into the global mobile travel network."
