glare/glare

Patient-reported symptoms: Temporary loss of vision. Bright light experience. No pain.
Ophthalmological examination results: normal eye
Diagnosis/Cause: Visible laser causes glare, dazzling, or temporary flash blindness. (Note: Infrared and UV laser beams are invisible and therefore by definition do not cause glare, glare, or flash blindness.)
LPS Review: This is not the cause of eye health problems. The only question is whether the glare could impair critical functions, such as pilots or drivers of motor vehicles exposed to the red laser pointer during landing.

minor injury
Patient-reported symptoms: No or mild visual impairment. Black spots in the field of vision.
Ophthalmological findings: non-foveal retinopathy. [This means one or more visible spots on the retina. The spots are not located in the small central (foveal) visual area, but elsewhere in the visual field. ]
Diagnosis/Cause: Small non-foveal retinal burn with little or no hemorrhage [hemorrhage].
LPS Comments: For the Army, this is not serious. Soldiers with these symptoms will return to work without seeing a doctor. This injury is likely to heal without noticeable impact on normal vision.
