Using a laser pointer in the universe
For years, space scientists have been coming up with this type of green beam kit for laser pointers that could communicate with unmanned space rovers on distant planets faster than radio waves. But the laser would disappear as it traveled 55 million miles to Mars -- only a few photons would actually reach the rover's listeners. For example, scientists must first be able to read encoded information from a single amount of light. So the high power laser pointer can also be zoomed to the relevant object. Objects include steel cladding, aluminum, copper, carbon fiber and Kevlar. So far, there have been no accidents. However, the interruption of flight operations is significant when the aircraft has to abort the landing approach and go around, which often occurs.

As you write, you know nothing about the danger, with a 10W laser (and you need more) and only 1% reflectivity, you still have 100mW of laser reflected. Importing is one thing, but more demanding to operate.
